Do non-ducted stove vent hoods work well?

Our larder gets smelly from cooking, so I want to install a vent hood. Do not the non-ducted models with charcoal filters effort well to eliminate odors, or should I go ahead and do the duct work to vent the hood externally?

Mine works awful. Just attend to the filters on a regular basis for superlative effect. Any time you make a new hole in your roof, you are horizontal to more chances of leaks in future, so I avoid making new holes in the roof.
